Before you bid

Four checks that decide if the lot can go.

A car that cannot be exported or registered costs more than the one you lost at the auction.

  1. The year

    Five years or newer

The Dominican Republic registers passenger vehicles up to five model years old; trucks over five tons, up to fifteen.

  2. The title

    Salvage yes, junk no

Salvage and rebuilt titles travel. A certificate of destruction, a junk or a parts-only title cannot be exported as a vehicle.

  3. The steering

    Left-hand drive

Right-hand-drive vehicles are not admitted in the Dominican Republic.

  4. The condition

    Does it roll?

Rolls, steers and brakes: RORO, with a jump-start fee if the battery is dead. It does not roll: a container.

Questions

Auction cars to the DR, answered.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Copart to the Dominican Republic?

From a yard in Florida, RORO from Port Everglades to Santo Domingo starts at about USD 1,200 for a sedan and USD 1,300 for an SUV or a small pickup, with the carrier charges included. Towing from the yard to the port, export papers and Dominican taxes are extra.

Can a car with a salvage title go to the Dominican Republic?

Yes. Salvage and rebuilt titles can be exported and imported into the Dominican Republic. Lots sold with a certificate of destruction or a parts-only or junk title cannot be exported as a vehicle: check the title type before you bid.

The car does not start. Can it still go RORO?

If it rolls, steers and brakes, yes: the carrier charges a jump-start fee. If it does not roll, it goes in a container. We tell you which one before the tow truck leaves the yard.

The auction has not sent the title yet. What happens?

The car can wait at the port terminal, where storage may be charged, but it only boards once U.S. Customs has validated the original title, at least 72 hours before loading. Send us the title as soon as it arrives.

Do you collect from any Copart or IAA yard?

Yes, anywhere in the United States. Yards in Florida are the closest to Port Everglades; from the Northeast the car can load in Newark.

Can I ship a car older than five years to the Dominican Republic?

Passenger vehicles must be five model years old or newer to be registered in the Dominican Republic; trucks over five tons, fifteen. Check the year before you bid.
