Cargomax International · FMC-Licensed Freight Forwarder
Project & Oversized Cargo
Flat rack, open top, breakbulk and RORO solutions for cargo that doesn’t fit a standard box — heavy machinery, vehicles and project shipments from the USA & Canada to Latin America, the Caribbean and worldwide.
Your specialist for project & oversized cargo
When your shipment doesn’t fit inside a standard container, you need a forwarder who handles out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo every week. Cargomax International is an FMC-licensed freight forwarder that has moved oversized, heavy and project cargo since 2001 — from the USA and Canada to Latin America, the Caribbean and worldwide. Whatever the dimensions, we find the right equipment, secure it correctly and handle the port paperwork end to end.
What is out-of-gauge (OOG) and breakbulk cargo?
Out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo is anything that exceeds the internal dimensions or weight limits of a standard container — too tall, too wide, too long or too heavy to close the doors. Breakbulk is cargo shipped as individual pieces, lifted onto the vessel and secured rather than packed into a container. Both need specialised equipment, correct lashing and an experienced forwarder — a standard container booking simply won’t carry them.
What we handle
- Flat rack & open top containers — for loads that are too tall, too wide or too heavy for a standard box: transformers, tanks, pipes, boats and machinery.
- Breakbulk & static cargo — pieces shipped individually on the vessel when they exceed any container, with lashing and securing by experienced crews.
- RORO for rolling machinery — construction equipment, cranes, harvesters, tractors and trucks that roll on and off the vessel.
- Full project cargo coordination — multi-piece industrial projects, route surveys, permits and port handling managed as one shipment.
What we ship — every kind of oversized load
If it’s heavy, awkward or simply won’t fit a box, we’ve shipped it. Common project and breakbulk cargo we move:
Industrial & construction machinery
Excavators, bulldozers, cranes, drilling rigs, loaders and graders.
Energy & power equipment
Wind turbine blades, generators, transformers, boilers and reactors.
Building & infrastructure
Steel beams, prefabricated sections, pipes, precast concrete and structures.
Metals & raw materials
Steel coils, rebar, aluminium ingots, copper cathodes and wire rod.
Vehicles & rolling stock
Trucks, buses, tractors, rail cars and boats — by RORO or flat rack.
Project & modular cargo
Modular units, skid-mounted equipment, containerized labs and plant sections.
Breakbulk vs. container shipping — which do you need?
If your cargo fits and seals inside a standard container, go with FCL. The moment it doesn’t — by height, width, length or weight — it becomes an out-of-gauge or breakbulk shipment:
| Container shipping | Breakbulk / OOG | |
|---|---|---|
| The cargo | Fits inside a sealed 20′ or 40′ box | Too tall, wide, long or heavy for any box |
| How it’s loaded | Packed and sealed in the container | Lifted and secured piece by piece |
| Equipment used | Standard dry, reefer or high-cube container | Flat rack, open top, breakbulk or RORO |
| Best for | Palletized and boxed goods | Machinery, project cargo, vehicles, structures |

How we move oversized cargo safely
Every out-of-gauge shipment is planned before it moves: we confirm exact dimensions and weight, select flat rack, open top, breakbulk or RORO, arrange the lifting and lashing, and prepare the export documentation for Canada or the USA and the paperwork required at the destination port. Your cargo is surveyed, secured and tracked until it’s in your hands.

Frequently asked questions
What counts as oversized or out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo?
Any load that exceeds the internal dimensions or weight limits of a standard 20′ or 40′ container — too tall, too wide, too long or too heavy. It travels on flat racks, open tops, as breakbulk, or by RORO if it rolls.
What’s the difference between breakbulk and container shipping?
Container shipping seals your goods inside a standard box. Breakbulk ships oversized pieces individually — lifted onto the vessel and secured — when they’re too large or heavy to containerize. Out-of-gauge cargo on flat racks and open tops sits in between.
How do I get a quote for project cargo?
Send us the dimensions (length × width × height), the weight, and the origin and destination. We reply the same day with the recommended equipment and pricing. Photos help but aren’t required.
Do you handle permits and port paperwork?
Yes — we prepare the Canadian or US export documentation, arrange lifting and lashing, and coordinate the paperwork required at the destination port. You deal with one team from pickup to delivery.
Can you ship a vehicle or rolling machinery?
Yes. Cars, trucks, buses, tractors and construction equipment travel by RORO (roll-on/roll-off) or in a container, depending on the unit. Tell us what you’re moving and we’ll recommend the safest, most cost-effective option.
How is oversized cargo secured on the vessel?
Every out-of-gauge piece is lashed and braced to the flat rack, deck or hold by experienced crews, following the carrier’s securing standards. We survey the cargo before loading so nothing shifts in transit.
Is Cargomax licensed and insured to move project cargo?
Yes — we are an FMC-licensed, US-bonded freight forwarder and a member of CIFFA, FIATA, IATA, NMFTA and CCIRS, moving oversized and project cargo since 2001.
