Single Central American Declaration (DUCA)
The Central American Single Declaration (DUCA) unites the three main customs declarations that protect trading between Central American countries.

The DUCA integrates the Central American Single Customs Form (FAUCA), which is used to con-duct intra-regional trade of originating merchandise. Commonly known as DUT, the Declaration for International Land Customs Transit, is used for the international land transit of goods in Central America. Finally, the Goods Declaration, which is called DUA or DM, is used for trade with specif-ic countries outside the region.

The DUCA has three modalities:

The DUCA-F must be used to trade merchandise that originated in Central American.
The DUCA-D must be used for the import or export of goods with countries outside Central Ameri-ca.
The DUCA-T must be used for the transfer of goods under the international land transit regime.

The application of the DUCA entered into force in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama as of May 7, 2019.

This is a trade facilitation measure, which is the result of the efforts of the region’s customs ser-vices, as well as the Council of Ministers of Economic Integration. It constitutes a firm step to-wards strengthening Central American economic integration.

ABOUT NICARAGUA

Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, with over 50,000 square miles of incredible biodiversity bordered by Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south. Nicaragua is known as the “Land of Volcanoes and Lakes” and is home to the second largest rainforest in the Americas. It is also home to six million people, who are a mix of European and indigenous descent. It is primarily an agricultural economy, with over sixty percent of its exports being cropped like coffee, bananas, cassava, cotton, and tobacco. The country’s strong trade partnership with Venezuela accounts for much of those exports, and in recent years Nicaragua has tried to diversify its offerings, introducing new crops like peanuts, sesame, onions, and melons. Mining is also a big industry sector, though it is less than 1% of the GDP. Lumber is also a valuable industry, though new restrictions are being enforced to help offset environmental impacts on the rainforest from lumber companies.

Like many countries in Central and South America, the government has a renewed interest in attracting ecotourism to the country and has made investments in that direction. Tourism is currently the second largest industry in Nicaragua.

INTERNATIONAL SEAPORTS IN NICARAGUA

Nicaragua has eight ports located on both coasts, however, only six are big enough to qualify as seaports. On the Pacific side are Corinto, Sandino, and San Juan del Sur. On the Caribbean side, you’ll find Puerto Cabezas, El Buff, and Bluefields.

Puerto Corinto

Located on the Pacific side of Nicaragua, Puerto Corinto is the largest, busiest seaport in Nicaragua. It is the only Pacific port for import and export shipments, the only Nicaraguan container port, and has a railroad terminus. The container terminal can handle bulk, liquid, and large shipments like cars.

Puerto Sandino

This small surfing town has remained a major port because of its crude oil supply line. It is connected to the capital city of Managua by highway, and is roughly 70km away. Cargo at Sandino is unloaded using barges, and there is a berth for solid cargo and one for liquid cargo.

Bluefields

The capital of the South Caribbean Autonomous Zone, Bluefields is the primary Caribbean-side port, exporting hardwood and seafood like shrimp and lobster. The small city only recently was connected to the west coast with a highway and transportation is very limited.

Puerto El Buff:

Located in Bluefields Bay, El Buff has very limited cargo capacity, and primarily functions as a Caribbean base for commercial fishing vessels.

INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS IN NICARAGUA

Managua International Airport / Augusto C. Sandino International airport

While there are over 100 airports in Nicaragua, the airport in Managua, the capital city, is the largest, and the only one that handles international destinations and cargo shipments. Augusto C. Sandino International airport, also known as Managua International Airport, handles three cargo lines, with four international destinations including Miami, Panama, Bogota, and San Salvador. The airport also services 11 passenger airlines, with several American destinations.
