Air or ocean?

Fly what is urgent. Ship what is heavy.

Most of what we move goes by sea. Air is the right answer for a smaller set of shipments, and we tell you honestly which one fits yours.

What flies

The shipments that make sense by air.

If one of these sounds like yours, send us the weight and the dimensions and we price it the same day.

  • Spare parts

    A machine is stopped

Engine parts, hydraulics, electronics for equipment that is waiting at a job site, a farm or a plant in Latin America.

  • Samples

    A client is waiting

Product samples, prototypes and first units for a buyer who decides before the next sailing.

  • High value

    Small and valuable

Electronics, instruments and goods where the value per kilo makes the freight a small part of the cost.

  • Split shipments

Part now, the rest by sea

The urgent part of an order by air so work can start, the bulk in a container at a fraction of the price.

  • Deadlines

    A date that cannot move

Material for an opening, an event or a contract with a delivery date at destination.

  • Documents

    Originals that must travel

Paperwork that has to arrive with the cargo or before it, sent with the air shipment.

How the price works

You pay for space or weight, whichever is more.

Airlines sell space in the hold by the kilo, but a bulky light box takes the space of a heavy one. That is why exact dimensions matter as much as the weight.

Chargeable weight

For each piece we compare the actual weight with the volumetric weight, and the higher one is charged. The volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres, divided by 6,000.

An example

A box of 60 × 50 × 40 cm weighing 12 kg has a volumetric weight of 60 × 50 × 40 / 6,000 = 20 kg. It is charged as 20 kg. The same box packed into 50 × 40 × 30 cm would be charged on 12 kg, its actual weight.

What else is in the price

Pickup and delivery, airport handling, security screening, fuel surcharges set by the airline, export filing, and duties and taxes at destination. We list every line in the written quote so you can compare it with any other offer.

Seven things we need from you.

With these details we can come back with a written price, usually the same business day. Without the dimensions the quote is only an estimate.

  • What it is, and its value
  • Number of pieces
  • Weight of each piece
  • Length, width and height of each piece, in cm or inches
  • Pickup city, or the airport you deliver to
  • Destination city and the consignee

Before you pack

Some goods cannot fly as normal cargo.

Airlines treat many everyday products as dangerous goods: lithium batteries and devices with batteries inside, aerosols, perfumes and alcohol-based products, paints, adhesives, some chemicals and anything flammable or pressurized.

These need a special declaration and approved packing, and some are not accepted by air at all. Tell us exactly what is in the box before booking. If it cannot fly, a container or RORO is often the answer.

General guidance only. Airline and destination rules change and the carrier has the final word on what it accepts. We confirm the conditions for your shipment when we quote.

Questions

Air freight, answered.

When is air freight worth it instead of ocean?

When the cost of waiting is higher than the cost of flying: a machine stopped for a spare part, a client waiting for samples, a deadline at destination. For anything heavy, bulky or not urgent, a container or RORO costs a fraction of the price.

How is an air freight price calculated?

Airlines charge on the chargeable weight: the higher of the actual weight and the volumetric weight. The volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 6,000, per piece. A light but bulky box can cost more than a small heavy one, so exact dimensions give an exact price.

Can you ship from anywhere in Canada or the USA?

Yes. We book from the airport nearest to your cargo, or have it picked up and taken to the airport with the best connection to your destination in Latin America or the Caribbean.

Do you handle customs at destination?

We prepare the export documents and the air waybill, and coordinate the release at destination with a customs broker or our agent in that country. Duties and taxes at destination are paid by the consignee unless agreed otherwise.

Can I ship batteries, perfumes or chemicals by air?

Many of them are dangerous goods for airlines: lithium batteries, aerosols, perfumes, paints, some chemicals. They need a special declaration and packing, and some cannot fly at all. Tell us exactly what it is before booking and we confirm whether it can go by air.

Is air freight available for every destination?

We quote air freight case by case for Latin America, the Caribbean and the rest of the world. Send us the details and we confirm the routing, the price and the timing in writing.

Can I combine air and ocean?

Yes. A common setup is the bulk of the order in a container and the urgent part by air, so the client can start working while the rest is at sea. Ask for both quotes at once.
