How to read these figures. Ocean freight quoted by CargoMax between June 2025 and October 2026, Newark to Santo Domingo, port to port, in U.S. dollars, rounded. They are indicative only, not an offer or a quote. The rate for your truck depends on its exact length, width, height and weight, on the carrier and the sailing, and on the bunker adjustment (BAF) and other surcharges, which carriers revise every month. Trucking to the port, U.S. title validation, port charges and Dominican duties and taxes are extra. Only the written quotation from a CargoMax office is binding.
Two tractor units, one RORO slot.
For dealers and fleet buyers shipping tractors in pairs.

The front axle of the second unit is lifted onto the fifth wheel of the first and secured, and the pair drives up the ramp as one. Our most recent pair from Newark sailed for about USD 2,400 in ocean freight, less than one tractor booked on its own.
The carrier accepts the combination only if the total height and length fit its deck, so we ask for the measurements of both trucks before booking. A specialised driveaway company mounts and secures them before the port cut-off.
A truck is priced by its size, so measure it the way the carrier will.
Most rate surprises on trucks come from a height or a length that was guessed. Five numbers decide its place on deck.
- Length from the front bumper to the end of the frame, hitch and overhang included
- Width at the widest point, mirrors folded
- Height to the highest point: exhaust stacks, air deflector, beacons, or the boom at rest
- Weight from the registration or a scale ticket
- Anything that changes its shape: fifth wheel, crane, dump body, or a load on the deck
Very tall or very long units may need a Mafi trailer or a flat rack. We tell you before you book, never at the terminal.

From our booking system, every U.S. load port. A truck has to be at the terminal, title validated, before the cut-off shown.

One file number from the first photo to the release.
Photos, VIN and measurements
Send the VIN, a photo of the data plate and the five measurements. We check the model year against the Dominican limit, choose the vessel and reply with a written quote.
To the terminal
Drive it there yourself, or let us arrange it: a professional driver with temporary plates and road insurance, or a lowboy if it does not run. Trucks bought in Canada cross the border in bond to Newark.
Title check and export filing
U.S. Customs reviews the original title before loading. We file the export, the transit bond for Canadian units, and issue the bill of lading.
On board
The truck is driven up the ramp, chained to the deck and sails for about 8 days to Santo Domingo. Follow the vessel on our sailings board.
Customs and handover
Our appointed agent in Santo Domingo files the DGA entry, has the truck inspected against its title and hands it over at the terminal, or delivers it to your yard.
Before you buy the truck, check its age and its paperwork.

Age
Trucks over five tons can be imported up to fifteen years old under Law 4-07. For pickups, vans and lighter trucks the limit can be stricter. Our agent confirms the rule for your exact unit and model year before you pay for it.
Taxes
Duties are charged on the CIF value: the import tariff of the truck's tariff line, 18% ITBIS and, for road vehicles, the first-registration tax. Commercial importers clear with their RNC.
What can stay on the truck
A dump body, a crane or tools that belong to the truck are fine. Personal effects are not. Anything else carried on it must appear on the bill of lading and be accepted by the carrier first.
Guidance only, not customs advice. Dominican rules and tax rates can change; what counts is the rule in force when the truck lands. Our Santo Domingo agent reviews each unit before booking.
The truck's papers, ready before the cut-off.
Scans are enough to book; the original title goes to the terminal.
- Original title in the shipper's or seller's name, or a certified copy
- Bill of sale, and the lien release if the truck was financed
- Shipper's photo ID, and the consignee's cédula or RNC
- VIN, data-plate photo and the five measurements
- Keys, with no more than a quarter tank of fuel
- For trucks from Canada: registration and export declaration

How much does it cost to ship a tractor truck to the Dominican Republic?
In 2026 the ocean freight for a tractor unit from Newark to Santo Domingo ranged from about USD 2,700 to 3,700 in our quotes, depending mostly on its size. Treat that as a guide: BAF and other surcharges move every month, and trucking to the port, title validation, port charges and Dominican taxes come on top. Your truck gets its own written quote.
Can two tractor units travel piggyback?
Yes. One is mounted on the fifth wheel of the other and the pair sails as a single unit, which usually costs less than two separate bookings. We need the combined height and length to confirm the carrier accepts the combination.
My truck does not run. Can it still go RORO?
Yes, but it has to be towed aboard or placed on a Mafi trailer, which the carrier charges extra for, and it must be declared as non-running when we book. A lowboy can bring it to the terminal.
How old can a truck be for the Dominican Republic?
Up to fifteen years for trucks over five tons. Pickups, vans and lighter trucks can face a stricter limit, so we check the model year of your exact unit with our Santo Domingo agent before you buy it.
I bought the truck in Quebec or Ontario. Where does it load?
On the U.S. East Coast, usually Newark. It is driven or carried there under a U.S. transit bond, which we file, and boards the next RORO vessel to Santo Domingo.
How long until the truck is in Santo Domingo?
About 8 days at sea from Newark, plus a few days before sailing for title validation, and usually three to five working days after arrival for the release once duties are paid.
Tell us about the truck. We find it a deck.
VIN, measurements and where it is parked are enough. We reply with the next RORO sailing to Santo Domingo, the freight in writing and an estimate of the Dominican taxes.
