Budget

What a container from Montreal costs.

Ocean freight from the two Canadian ports that serve the Dominican Republic, as a starting point for your budget. Your price is the one on the written quote we send you.

Read this before budgeting. Sample ocean-freight ranges in U.S. dollars, port to port, as of 22 September 2026. They are not a quote, an offer or a guarantee and change with the carrier, the sailing, space, surcharges and the cargo. Pickup in Montreal, port charges, Dominican duties and taxes, customs brokerage and delivery in the DR are not included. Only the written quotation from CargoMax is binding. How it works

From your door in Montreal to your door on the island.

One file number and one person to call, in French, English or Spanish.

  1. Quote and booking

Send the packing list, or the vehicle and its VIN. We confirm the route, the vessel, the cut-off and the rate in writing, usually the same day.

  2. Pickup in Greater Montreal

The empty container arrives at your home or business in Montreal, Laval or on the South Shore and you load it. For some cargo it is easier to drop the goods at a loading warehouse we work with. Cars for RORO are collected and trucked to the U.S. port.

  3. Export filing and bill of lading

Canadian export declaration, validation of the vehicle registration when a car is shipped, and a bill of lading issued by CargoMax as an FMC-registered OTI.

  4. Sail and track

The container sails from the Port of Montreal or Halifax, the car from Newark or Baltimore. Track the vessel on this site or ask us on WhatsApp.

  5. Release in the Dominican Republic

Our appointed agent in Santo Domingo presents your file to the DGA, claims the returning-resident exemption when you qualify, and can settle the port charges for you.

  6. To the door

The container is trucked from Haina or Caucedo to the address you gave us, unloaded, and we return the empty box to the terminal.

Before you book

Three things to check before you ship.

Updated 26 Oct 2026 · confirm at booking

Household goods of returning residents

Used household goods can enter duty-free under Law 168-67 with proof of at least two years abroad. Keep your Canadian lease, pay stubs or tax notices: they are the usual proof. New items still in boxes are taxed.

Cars

Passenger vehicles must be five model years old or newer to be imported into the Dominican Republic. Check the year before you buy in Quebec, and have the original registration or bill of sale in your name for the export.

Food, medicines and plants

Need a permit from the Dominican ministry concerned before the vessel arrives. Tell us at booking so the container is not held at the port.

The full list is on our page about Dominican import rules for containers.

General information only, not customs advice. Dominican rules, duties and vehicle age limits change, and the ones in force when your cargo sails may differ from these. Our Santo Domingo agent confirms the rules for your shipment at the time of booking.

Both ends

Booked in Montreal. Released in Santo Domingo.

Your file is opened at our head office on Montreal’s South Shore and handled at destination by our appointed agent in Santo Domingo, on the same CargoMax file number, from pickup to delivery.

Questions

Montreal to the DR, answered.

How long does shipping from Montreal to the Dominican Republic take?

A container sailing direct from the Port of Montreal reaches Rio Haina in about 10 days and Caucedo in about 12. When the container goes through Halifax, count about 20 days to Caucedo. A car by RORO is trucked to Newark or Baltimore and sails 5 to 9 days from there, plus about a week for title validation before loading.

Do containers sail directly from the Port of Montreal to the Dominican Republic?

Yes. A container service loads at the Port of Montreal and calls Rio Haina and Caucedo. When its dates do not suit you, we book the next vessel from Halifax or the U.S. East Coast instead. The board on this page shows every upcoming departure from a Canadian port.

Can you pick up in Laval, Longueuil or the South Shore?

Yes. We position the empty container at your house, warehouse or business anywhere in Greater Montreal for loading, then truck it to the port. Depending on the cargo, you can also deliver the goods to a loading warehouse we work with.

Can I ship a car from Montreal to the Dominican Republic?

Yes, two ways. By RORO: we truck the car from Montreal to Newark or Baltimore, validate the Canadian registration for export and drive it onto the vessel to Santo Domingo. Or inside a 40-foot container from the Port of Montreal, with your household goods packed around it on one bill of lading.

How much does a container from Montreal to the Dominican Republic cost?

As an example, in September 2026 a 20-foot container from Montreal to Rio Haina or Caucedo ran about USD 1,900 to 2,600 ocean freight, and a 40-foot about USD 2,600 to 3,500. These are illustrative ranges, not a quote: the carrier, the sailing, surcharges and the commodity all move the price, and pickup, Dominican duties, port charges and delivery are extra. Ask for a written quote.

Does the Port of Montreal operate in winter?

Yes. The Port of Montreal works all year, and the container services to the Caribbean keep sailing through the winter. Book early before December: space to the Dominican Republic fills up ahead of the holidays.

Can I speak to someone in French or Spanish?

Yes. Our head office on Montreal’s South Shore answers in French, English and Spanish, and our appointed agent in Santo Domingo answers in Spanish and English on the phone or on WhatsApp.

My things will not fill a container. What then?

CargoMax ships full containers, RORO and project cargo. Many households from Montreal fill a 20-foot more easily than they expect; send us the list of what you have and we tell you honestly whether a container is the right option.
