Barrels, boxes, a fridge, a car: how to fill a container for Haiti.
Most families who ship from Montreal to Haiti load their own container at home. A good inventory and a tight load are what get it through customs quickly and in one piece.
Choose the size by volume
A 20-foot container holds about 33 m³: the contents of a small apartment, or up to about 80 barrels. A 40-foot holds about 67 m³, a 40-foot high cube 76 m³: a full house, or a car at the front with the household behind it.
Write the inventory as you load
List every barrel, box and piece of furniture with a number, its contents and an estimated value, in French. Haitian customs works from this list. Number the barrels and boxes to match the list, and keep a copy on your phone.
Load heavy at the bottom, tight to the doors
Barrels and appliances on the floor, boxes on top, no empty gaps. Strap or brace the last row so nothing falls when the doors open in Haiti. Appliances travel empty and dry; a car travels with less than a quarter tank and the battery disconnected.
What not to put in
- Weapons, ammunition and explosives
- Drugs, and medicines without a prescription
- Fuel, gas cylinders, paint and other flammables
- Cash, jewellery and documents you cannot replace
- Counterfeit goods

Next container vessels to Haiti
Container services with a call in Haiti that still accept cargo, straight from our booking system. Deliver the loaded container before the cut-off or it waits for the next vessel.
Sending a car or a truck to Haiti.
Updated 26 Oct 2026 · confirm at booking
Two ways to ship it
RORO: we collect the vehicle in Montreal and a bonded driver takes it to a U.S. East Coast port, where it is driven onto a RORO vessel to Haiti. In a container: the car is chocked and lashed at the front of a 40-foot container from the Port of Montreal, with your household goods behind it on the same bill of lading.
Model year
Haiti limits the age of imported cars and updates the accepted model year regularly. Trailers and yellow construction equipment have had no year limit, and specialized trucks are accepted when their special equipment is proven. Ask our agent for the current year before you buy the vehicle.
Documents for the vehicle
- Original title, made out to the consignee in Haiti
- Bill of sale signed before a notary, or a commercial invoice
- Original bill of lading
- Make, model, colour, year, engine size, VIN and weight on the paperwork
This is a general guide, not customs advice. Haitian import rules, duties and age limits can change and may be different by the time your cargo ships. Our agents in Haiti confirm what applies to your shipment when you book: Import-hti@cargomaxintl.com.

More from CargoMax.
Montreal to Haiti, answered.
How long does a container take from Montreal to Haiti?
About three weeks to Port-au-Prince on the container service that loads at the Port of Montreal; the vessel calls other Caribbean ports on the way. Cap-Haïtien and Saint-Marc are booked on the sailing that serves them, with the transit confirmed at booking.
Can I send barrels to Haiti?
Yes, inside your own full container. Barrels, boxes and bins are loaded in a 20-foot or 40-foot container that travels on your bill of lading. We specialize in full container loads (FCL), RORO and project cargo, so we do not ship single barrels on their own.
Which port should my container go to: Port-au-Prince, Cap-Haïtien or Saint-Marc?
It depends on where the goods are going and on the sailing. Port-au-Prince serves the capital and the south, Cap-Haïtien the north, Saint-Marc the Artibonite and the centre. Our agents tell you which port makes delivery simplest at the time you ship.
Can I ship a car from Montreal to Haiti?
Yes. The car is collected in Montreal and taken by a bonded driver to a U.S. East Coast port, then sails RORO to Haiti. It can also go inside a 40-foot container from the Port of Montreal with household goods packed around it. Check the model year first: Haiti limits the age of imported cars.
What documents does Haitian customs ask for?
For household goods, a detailed inventory in French with values, the bill of lading and the consignee’s identification. For a vehicle, the original title made out to the consignee, a notarized bill of sale or commercial invoice and the original bill of lading. Our agent in Haiti checks the file before the vessel arrives.
Do you pick up the container at my home in Montreal?
Yes. We bring the empty container to your house, building or business anywhere in Greater Montreal, you load it, and we take it to the port. Depending on the cargo, you can also deliver the goods to a loading warehouse we work with.
How much does it cost to send a container from Montreal to Haiti?
It depends on the container size, the port in Haiti, the sailing and what is inside. Send us the inventory or the volume and we reply with a written quote, usually the same business day. Haitian duties, port charges and delivery in Haiti are separate from the ocean freight.
Can I talk to someone in French?
Yes. Our head office in La Prairie, on Montreal’s South Shore, answers in French, English and Spanish, and our agents in Port-au-Prince and Saint-Marc follow your file at destination.
