The DUCA declaration

Imports into Guatemala are declared on the DUCA, the single Central American customs declaration, filed by a Guatemalan customs broker working for the consignee.

The consignee’s NIT

The person or company receiving the cargo needs a NIT tax number. Import duties depend on the tariff code of each item, and 12% VAT is added on the customs value.

Documents we send ahead

The bill of lading, the commercial invoice and the packing list reach the broker before the vessel arrives, so the release can start the day the container is unloaded.

General guidance only. Guatemalan rules and rates may differ at the time you ship and must be confirmed with the customs broker at destination when you book.

Questions

Montreal to Guatemala, answered.

Is there a direct container service from Montreal to Guatemala?

Yes. A container service loads at the Port of Montreal almost every week and calls Puerto Quetzal on the Pacific, then Santo Tomás de Castilla and Puerto Barrios on the Caribbean. The board on this page shows the next departures from the booking system.

How long does it take from Montreal to Guatemala?

About three to five weeks at sea, depending on the vessel and the port: Puerto Quetzal is usually the first call, Santo Tomás comes a day later and Puerto Barrios about ten days after that. We confirm the dates of your sailing in the quote.

Which port should I choose?

The one closest to where the cargo is going. Puerto Quetzal is about 100 km from Guatemala City and serves the capital and the south; Santo Tomás and Puerto Barrios, about 300 km away on the Caribbean, suit the east of the country and Izabal.

Who clears the container in Guatemala?

A Guatemalan customs broker working for the consignee files the DUCA import declaration. The consignee needs a NIT tax number, and import duties plus 12% VAT are paid at release. We send the documents to the broker before the vessel arrives.

Can you pick up in Laval, Longueuil or elsewhere in Quebec?

Yes. We drop the empty container at your plant, warehouse or home in Greater Montreal, you load it, and we take it to the port. Further away in Quebec, we quote the trucking to Montreal.

Can I ship a vehicle from Quebec to Guatemala?

Yes. It can go inside a 40-foot container from Montreal, or be trucked to Newark or Baltimore and sail RORO to Santo Tomás de Castilla. Guatemala sets conditions on imported used vehicles, so check the unit with us before you buy.
