The route

Toronto has no port for this lane. Your container goes by rail.

Caribbean container services load on the St. Lawrence and the Atlantic, not on Lake Ontario. So the work happens in two legs that you book as one.

  1. Loaded at your door in the GTA

The empty 20-foot or 40-foot container is dropped at your address in Toronto, Mississauga or Brampton. You load it and close it, and it is sealed for the trip.

  2. By train to Montreal or Halifax

The container rides the rail line east to the Port of Montreal, where the direct service to Rio Haina loads, or to Halifax, whichever reaches a vessel first.

  3. At sea to the Dominican Republic

About 10 days from Montreal to Rio Haina, 12 to Caucedo; about 20 days from Halifax. The bill of lading is issued by CargoMax as an FMC-registered OTI.

  4. Released and delivered

Our appointed agent in Santo Domingo clears the container with the DGA and has it trucked to the address on the island you gave us.

Dominican rules that matter for Ontario shippers.

Updated 26 Oct 2026 · confirm at booking

Moving back? Used household goods of Dominicans returning after at least two years abroad can enter duty-free under Law 168-67. Leases, pay stubs and tax notices from Ontario are the usual proof of residence. New items still in their boxes pay duty.

Buying a car in Ontario to send? Passenger vehicles must be five model years old or newer, and right-hand-drive units are refused. Check the year before you buy.

Business cargo? Duties follow the tariff line of the goods plus 18% ITBIS on the CIF value. Food, medicines and plants need a ministry permit before the vessel arrives.

All the details are on our page about Dominican import rules for containers.

A general guide, not customs advice. Dominican rules, duties and age limits are set by the authorities, change over time and may be different when your container sails. Our Santo Domingo agent confirms what applies to your shipment at booking.

Questions

Toronto to the DR, answered.

Is there a port in Toronto for containers to the Dominican Republic?

No. The container services to the Caribbean do not call Toronto, so a container loaded in the GTA travels by rail to the Port of Montreal or to Halifax and sails from there. You book once with us and the rail leg is part of the same shipment.

How long does a container take from Toronto to the Dominican Republic?

Add the rail leg to the sea transit. From the Port of Montreal the vessel reaches Rio Haina in about 10 days and Caucedo in about 12; from Halifax, about 20 days to Caucedo. We give you the full door-to-port estimate with your quote, based on the next train and the next vessel.

Do you bring the container to my house in Mississauga or Brampton?

Yes. We drop the empty container at your house, building or business in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton and the rest of the GTA, you load it, and it goes to the rail terminal for Montreal or Halifax.

You have no office in Toronto. Who handles my shipment?

Our head office in La Prairie, near Montreal, runs every Ontario file by phone, WhatsApp and email, from the quote to delivery in the Dominican Republic. You never have to come to Montreal: the container comes to you, and the documents are signed by email.

Can I ship a car from Ontario to the Dominican Republic?

Yes. By RORO, the car is trucked from Toronto to Newark or Baltimore and driven onto the vessel to Santo Domingo; we validate the Ontario ownership for export and file the U.S. transit bond. Or the car goes inside a 40-foot container with your belongings, by rail to Montreal or Halifax.

Montreal or Halifax: which one is better from Toronto?

Montreal is usually faster because the vessel goes direct to Rio Haina. Halifax is the alternative when its sailing date suits you better. We compare both for every booking and tell you which one gets your container there first.

How much does it cost from Toronto?

The ocean freight is the same as from the Port of Montreal or Halifax; the rail or truck leg from Toronto is added on top and depends on the container and the date. Example ocean ranges are on our page about shipping from Montreal; your price is the written quote, usually sent the same business day.

Can I talk to someone in Spanish?

Yes. Our team answers in Spanish, English and French, and our appointed agent in Santo Domingo speaks Spanish with your family when the container arrives.
