ABOUT GUATEMALA

Once the seat of the Mayan Empire, Guatemala sits in a crucial place directly between Mexico to its north and west, and the rest of Central America to the south. It is the largest economy in Central America, and home to over 17 million people. While in the past Guatemala has been rife with political unrest, modern Guatemala is an ambitious country, determined to pull itself into the new century with a focus on foreign investment and ecotourism. The main exports of Guatemala have historically been coffee, sugar, textiles, vegetables, and bananas. However, now the country has put a large focus on staple crops used for biofuel production, such as sugarcane and palm oil. Agriculture is 2/5th of all exported goods, and supports over 50% of the labor force. Gold, silver, zinc, cobalt, and nickel are all mined in the country. The major industry in Guatemala is, however, tourism. Nearly two million visitors come every year to visit the numerous incredible Mayan archeological sites around the country, contributing billions to the local economy, and over 63% of their annual GDP. Most of these visitors come with the many cruise ships who make stops at Guatemala seaports in both the Pacific and the Caribbean.

Guatemala is in a key supply chain spot for export companies working in Central and South America. It is also a country hungry for foreign investment, and consequently, foreign investors are starting to take notice.
